Good fishing trips don’t happen by accident. A little preparation before you leave means more time actually fishing and fewer problems on the water.
Check Gear the Night Before
Inspect line for nicks and weak spots. Test drag systems. Make sure reels are clean and lubricated. Replace any damaged terminal tackle. Nothing worse than finding problems at the lake.
Organize Tackle
Pack only what you’ll actually use. A few proven lures beat a tackle box stuffed with stuff you never throw. Sort by the species you’re targeting and conditions you expect.
Research the Water
Check recent fishing reports for your destination. Look at water temperature, water level, and recent weather. This helps you choose appropriate gear and tactics.
Study maps for access points and structure. Having a plan beats wandering aimlessly.
Licenses and Regulations
Verify your license is current. Know the regulations for where you’re going – size limits, bag limits, special rules. These vary by water body.
Pack Essentials
Beyond fishing gear: sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, rain gear, water, snacks, first aid kit, pliers, knife, flashlight if you might be out after dark. Bug spray in summer.
Phone charger for emergencies and navigation.
Boat Checklist
If you’re trailering: check lights, tire pressure, drain plug (before launching). Top off fuel. Verify registration and safety equipment are aboard.
Tell Someone
Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return. Basic safety that too many people skip.
Rest Up
An early morning trip means getting sleep the night before. Tired anglers make poor decisions and enjoy the day less.
