They're 11, and both want to play in the NBA, just like Quincy's dad. Their love-hate relationship lasts into high school, with Monica's edge and Quincy's top-dog attitude separating them, except when Quincy's parents argue and he climbs through Monica's window to sleep on the floor.

Monica (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps) are two childhood friends who both aspire to be professional basketball players. Quincy, whose father, Zeke (Dennis Haysbert), plays for the Los Angeles Clippers, is a natural talent and a born leader.

As they grow into adulthood, they fall in love, but they also share another all-consuming passion: basketball. They eventually follow separate career paths though high school and college basketball and, they hope, into stardom in big-league professional ball.

Prince-Bythewood, who played basketball in high school and ran track at UCLA, describes "Love & Basketball" as semi-autobiographical. Due to her personal connection to the heroine, she had extremely high expectations during casting. She even contemplated playing the role herself but was dissuaded by the love scenes.

The movie later concludes at 1998. Monica has finally gone pro in the Women's National Basketball Association. The WNBA was created a couple years earlier in the 1990s. The movie ends with Quincy and Monica's toddler daughter cheer Monica on during one of her games.
